Pest Control in Enid's Kenwood Historic District

Kenwood sits northwest of downtown Enid, between Oak Street on the north, Maple on the south, Washington on the east and Madison on the west. Its houses went up between 1895 and 1915 on about 160 acres, and the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The houses are a catalog of the era: Prairie School, American Foursquare, Craftsman bungalows, Colonial Revival, Shingle style, Neoclassical and Tudor Revival. Beautiful houses, and ones with more than a century of settling, additions and patched-in utilities.

Termites and Old Wood

A house more than a hundred years old has a lot of wood near the ground, and some of it has been replaced or repaired over the years. That's worth a termite inspection, especially if you've seen swarmers in spring. OSU says March through May is swarm season in Oklahoma.

Keep mulch raked back from the foundation, firewood off the ground and away from the house, and gutters draining away from the walls.

Mice, Spiders and Storage

Old houses have old gaps: around pipes added decades after the house was built, under doors that no longer sit square, and through foundation vents. Mice use them every fall. Rodent control in an older house usually takes more sealing than in a new one.

Attics, basements and storage closets full of boxes are also where brown recluse spiders like to settle. Our brown recluse guide covers what to do about it.
