Mosquito Control in Enid, Oklahoma
Enid summers are hot. July's average high is in the mid 90s, and June is usually the wettest month. That mix of heat and rain is good mosquito weather, and by July the evenings on the patio can get unpleasant.
There's a health side too. The Oklahoma State Department of Health says the Culex mosquito is the main carrier of West Nile virus in the state, and that Culex numbers climb in mid to late summer when it's hot, especially in dry spells.
Start With Standing Water
Mosquitoes breed in still water, and a lot of it is in our own yards. OSDH's list of things to empty or keep from holding water is a good checklist:
- Buckets, cans and flower pots
- Pool covers and kids' toys
- Old tires
- Pet water bowls (empty and refill daily)
- Bird baths (clean every three days)
- Clogged gutters and low spots that hold water after a storm
What a Yard Treatment Does
Adult mosquitoes rest during the day in shady, damp spots: under decks, in shrubs, in tall grass along fences. A provider treats those resting areas and looks for breeding spots you might miss. Treatments are usually repeated through the season. Ask how often they come and what they use, especially if you have bees, a pond or a vegetable garden.

Protecting Yourself
OSDH recommends a repellent with DEET, picaridin or IR3535 on skin and clothing, and permethrin on clothing only. Take extra care from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most likely to bite. Fix torn window and door screens too. Ticks are out at the same time of year, so see tick control if you're dealing with both.
