Ant Control in Enid, Oklahoma

Ants are usually the first bug call of the spring around Enid. A line of tiny dark ants shows up along the kitchen counter, under the dishwasher or around the bathroom sink, and wiping them up doesn't seem to slow them down.

According to Richard Grantham at OSU's Plant Disease and Insect Diagnostic Lab, odorous house ants and little black ants are the most common ants inside Oklahoma homes. Neither one does much harm, but a steady trail across the counter gets old fast.

Why Spraying the Trail Doesn't Fix It

The ants you see are a small slice of the colony. The nest might be under the slab, in a wall, under a flower bed or beneath the edging by the back door. Killing the workers on the counter leaves the queens untouched, and new workers show up in a day or two.

That's why most providers lean on baits. Worker ants carry the bait back and share it, and it works its way through the colony. Spraying the same spots where the bait is sitting can keep ants from taking it, so let the provider know if you've already used a spray.

What You Can Do Before the Visit

What About Fire Ants?

OSU Extension says imported fire ants first crossed into Oklahoma from Texas in 1985 and are well established in counties along the Red River, from Love County east. That's a long way south of Garfield County. If you see an aggressive red ant with a painful sting that leaves a white pustule, mention it on the call so the provider knows what to look for.

Ants with wings coming out of a wall in spring might not be ants at all. Check the termite swarmer guide before you assume.

Questions We Get

Should I put out store-bought ant bait first?

You can. If you do, don't spray around it, and tell the provider what you used and where.

Will the treatment be safe for my dog?

Tell the provider about pets. Baits can go in spots pets can't reach, and outdoor treatments usually need time to dry before pets go back out.
