Wasp and Hornet Removal in Enid, Oklahoma
Wasps are a summer and fall problem around Enid. OSU Extension lists paper wasps, yellowjackets including the baldfaced hornet, mud daubers and cicada killers among the wasps Oklahomans run into. They act very differently, and only some of them are worth worrying about.
Paper wasps hang an open, single comb from eaves, porch ceilings, shrubs and branches. Yellowjackets build a big covered paper nest, often underground or tucked into a wall void or attic. Mud daubers build mud tubes on porches, carports and attics and rarely sting anyone.
When Nests Become a Problem
OSU says paper wasp colonies usually peak in late summer or early fall and are most defensive in summer. Yellowjacket colonies peak in the fall and stay active late into the season. They're the ones that crash a picnic, crowd the trash can and work fallen fruit.
Ground nests are the sneaky ones. OSU warns that mowing or trimming near one will very likely get you stung. If you notice a steady stream of wasps going in and out of a hole in the lawn or a gap in the siding, mark it and keep people away.
Nests in Walls and Attics
OSU recommends professional help for large nests and for nests in wall voids or attics. Sealing the hole from outside can push the wasps inward into the house. A provider treats the nest first, then the opening can be closed once the colony is dead.
- Don't plug the entrance hole yourself
- Keep kids and pets away from the area
- Note where the wasps are going in and out

Mud Daubers and Cicada Killers
OSU says mud daubers don't attack and sting people, and they usually don't need insecticide. Knocking down the mud nests and closing up the garage or shed is enough. Cicada killers are big, but the females only sting if handled, and males can't sting at all. They're usually best left alone. If they're digging up a high-traffic area, ask the provider.
Questions We Get
Can I spray a paper wasp nest myself?
Small, reachable paper wasp nests can be handled with a wasp spray from a distance. Large nests, yellowjackets in the ground and nests inside walls are better left to a provider.
Do you handle honey bees?
Honey bee swarms are often a job for a local beekeeper. Tell us what you're seeing and we'll point you in the right direction.
