Tick Control in Enid, Oklahoma

Ticks are a real concern in Oklahoma. OSU Extension names the American dog tick and the lone star tick as the two species of concern, since both carry disease. OSU also says Oklahoma has some of the highest infection rates in the country for tularemia, ehrlichiosis and spotted fever rickettsiosis, which includes Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Ticks are around all year here, but OSU says they're most active from late spring through the end of summer. Yards that back up to pasture, wheat fields, creek banks or tall grass along a fence line see the most.

Where Ticks Wait

Ticks climb grass and brush and wait for something to brush past. In a yard, that means the edges more than the middle of a mowed lawn. Look at:

What a Yard Treatment Covers

A provider treats the edges, shady areas and pet zones where ticks wait. Keeping grass short along the fence and clearing brush helps the treatment work. Ask about timing, since starting before the late-spring peak helps, and ask about pets, gardens and kids' play areas.

Protecting People and Pets

OSU says the most effective repellents have at least 25 percent DEET. Put it around your ankles, up to the knees and around the waist, and around the neck too if you're working in heavy brush or trimming trees. Plant-based repellents like citrus oil or lemongrass oil are weaker but may suit young kids better, with more frequent reapplying.

Keep dogs on a vet-recommended tick product, and check everyone after time outdoors. For fleas on the same pets, see flea control.
